Homeowner buyer's guide

Hiring a kitchen remodeling specialists contractor in Toronto

A kitchen remodel touches cabinetry, countertops, electrical and plumbing all at once, which makes sequencing and trade coordination as important as the finishes you choose. Deciding between ready-to-assemble and custom cabinetry early shapes both budget and timeline.

What to look for

  • Clear explanation of RTA versus custom or semi-custom cabinetry
  • A sequencing plan for electrical and plumbing rough-in before cabinets go in
  • Accurate measuring and a detailed layout drawing before ordering materials
  • Countertop templating done after cabinets are installed, not before
  • A realistic timeline that accounts for lead times on custom orders

Questions to ask

  • Are we using RTA, semi-custom or fully custom cabinetry, and why?
  • How do you sequence electrical and plumbing rough-in with the cabinet install?
  • When is the countertop template taken, and what is the lead time?
  • What happens if we change our layout after ordering starts?
  • Who is responsible for coordinating the electrician and plumber?

What it tends to cost

Kitchen remodel costs can range from a modest cabinet and countertop refresh to a full gut renovation with layout changes, and the spread often comes down to cabinetry choice, countertop material and whether plumbing or electrical is relocated. RTA cabinetry generally costs less than custom work, though lead times can sometimes offset the savings, and layout changes that move plumbing or electrical will add to both cost and schedule. Get a written breakdown by category so cabinetry, counters and labour are each visible.

Red flags

  • Countertops measured before cabinets are actually installed
  • No clarity on cabinet type or where it is manufactured
  • Rough-in trades booked with no coordination plan
